SAFARI 2014 : March 14 - April 4, 2014
Patrick Francis / VIC - artsproject.org.au
Patrick Francis,_ Geisha, 2010, acrylic on paper, 50 x 35cm_
SafARI 2014 comprises two major exhibition components. These are SafARI and SafARI LIVE. SafARI will present the work of 14 emerging and unrepresented Australian artists, including 3 collaboratives, across venues ranging from Artist Run Initiatives to public spaces. SafARI LIVE will present the work of 7 Sydney-based performance artists who will stage live interventions throughout the exhibition period.
SafARI’s aim is to remain true to an alternative spirit and ensure that the quality of the experience and exchange is our focus. SafARI 2014 will take place from 14 March – 4 April 2014 across 7 venues around inner city Sydney. During the exhibition period the gallery spaces will be open from Wednesday through to Sunday, 12pm – 6pm. FREE Entry. Curated by Liz Nowell and Christiane Keys-Statham.
One of the Safari 2014 artists is Patrick Francis. Francis’ paintings explore aspects of his personal experience, resulting in distilled images that represent various portraits and still-life installations. Often utilising acrylic on paper as his chosen medium, Francis uses bold colour as an expressive tool, focusing his and the viewers attention on key elements in his paintings. Francis often references imagery from art history and visual culture. However his innovation is the stripping back of these well-worn images – reducing them to their basic visual elements, flattening form and line into sweeping bright blocks of colour. Iconic imagery is recontextualised and condensed; allowing us a unique glimpse into the artist’s eye, where details are discarded and the true essence of image making is revealed.
Francis is a Melbourne-based artist who has been working with Arts Project Australia since 2009. His work received the Art &Australia/Credit Suisse Private Banking Contemporary Art Award in 2012, and has been shown in exhibitions nationally including at the National Gallery of Victoria, Arts Project Australia, Sheffer Gallery, Tanks Art Centre, and at the 2012 Melbourne Art Fair. His work is also held in a number of private collections nationally.
