Posted on 19 October 2010 - Footscray Star
NOMINATIONS for the Maribyrnong Inclusive Recognition Awards (MIRA) have been extended to this Friday because of increased community interest.
The awards, being held for the first time in the municipality, recognise and celebrate the achievements of individuals with a disability and groups, businesses and not-for-profit organisations that contribute to improving the quality of life for people with a disability.
“We have had a good response to the awards, which highlights the number of individuals achieving outstanding goals and the number of groups and businesses within our community that are committed to diversity and inclusiveness,” mayor Sel Sanli said.
The awards were developed in consultation with the Disability Advisory Committee and will be judged by mayor Sel Sanli and members from the DAC.
The nominees will be awarded on Friday 3 December, as part of a special celebration event for International Day of People with Disability. About 12,600 people within the municipality are living with some type of disability, according to the 2006 Census.
